Man shot and injured by Portland police inside Corner Market in Northwest Portland
A Portland police officer shot and injured a man in a small local market on Tuesday night after the man apparently ate food without paying and then refused to go, police said.
Officers were called to the McCormick Pier Grocery & Deli in the 600 Block of Northwest Naito Parkway following a “unwanted person” report.
A caller told police the man was lying on the ground and did not want to leave after eating the food, said Lt. Greg Pashley, a police spokesperson.
An officer arrived at the store at 9:44 p.m. and the shooting was reported at 9:52 p.m., Pashley said.
An officer shot and injured an adult white man in the store, according to Pashley. He said he did not know if the man was armed or what led to the shooting.
Police reached the injured man, who had moved further into the store, at 9:56 p.m., Pashley said. He received medical treatment on the spot and was transported to hospital by ambulance.
He is expected to survive, police said, but did not disclose details of his injuries or his name.
Detectives cordoned off the store entrance with red crime scene tape and several blocks from Northwest Naito Parkway as they continued their investigation early Wednesday.
It was the third Portland police shootout this year. Police said the officer will be on paid administrative leave until the investigation is completed, which is common practice in police shootings. They did not immediately disclose the officer’s name.
Police Chief Chuck Lovell and Mayor Ted Wheeler’s Chief of Staff attended the scene.
“This is a situation that no officer wants to face,” Lovell said in a statement. “We are in the preliminary stages, but we will conduct a full investigation. “
The other two police shots were fatal.
Officer Zachary DeLong shot Robert Delgado, 46, on April 16 in Lents Park, southeast Portland, after calls to 911 reported a man was firing a gun quickly fire in the park. Police said a replica weapon was found on the ground near Delgado.
Constable Curtis Brown shot dead Michael Townsend, 40, on June 24 in the parking lot of Motel 6 in northeast Portland. Surveillance video released by police showed Townsend advancing towards officers with what looked like a screwdriver before he was shot. Police released a photograph of a tire repair tool with a sharp end and a screwdriver-type handle which they seized as evidence.
