BATON ROUGE – The LSU men’s tennis team announced the signing of transfer graduate Gabriel Diaz Freire for the 2021-2022 season on Tuesday afternoon.

The Gijon, Spain native spent last season as a member of the Alabama Crimson Tide. He previously played Loyola Marymount from 2016 to 2018 and then Clemson from 2018 to 2020.

During his two years at Loyola Marymount, Friere had 29 singles wins and 23 doubles wins as LMU number 1. He was All-WCC Second Team Singles and All-WCC First Team Doubles.

At Clemson, Freire played No. 1 in both singles and doubles. He compiled a 13-9 singles record and a 14-8 doubles record.

Last season in Alabama, he was primarily No. 4 and No. 5 for the Crimson Tide in singles. He compiled a 15-10 overall and a 10-6 in double play.

Prior to Freire’s college career, he competed in the Pro Futures Tour and achieved an ATP ranking of 1591.

Freire will bring a seniority factor to a relatively young team at LSU, where four of the six starters were in their first or second year. “Gabi is a fierce competitor who brings a lot of maturity and experience to a young team,” said the co-head coach. Chris brandi. “He went through an SEC season and won many duos games during his career,” Brandi said.
