Clavichords

clavichord by David JensenBased on Hass, Dolmetsch.

The clavichord, according to many musicians, is the ultimate training tool for technique. It is also the instrument for much of C.P.E. Bach's music. This clavichord, double-strung in brass, unfretted and with a compass FF-fff, is well-suited to the late Baroque. While no clavichord is loud, this instrument has a particularly wide dynamic range, quite lush and rich, and is very useful for the drama inherent in C.P.E.'s music. The case, frame-and-panel lid and stand may be had in walnut; the keyboard is usually finished with ebony naturals and bone or Corian-topped sharps. $ 14,500.00

Small clavichord, David Jensen, 1997

Small Clavichord

after an early 17th c. German instrument

This delightful little clavichord was made for a customer who wished to have an instrument to travel with. Indeed, she successfully took it to Paris as carry-on luggage! Despite its' diminutive size (42" x 12.5" x 4") it has sufficient range - four octaves, from C to ccc -to cover a great deal of clavichord literature. It has 26 pairs of brass strings, so it is a fretted instrument, meaning that adjacent keys will share the same string pair. While it may seem to be an inconvenience to have, for example cc, cc# and dd share the same strings, in practice those keys are rarely, if ever, played at the same time. An added advantage is that with so few strings the instrument is tuned very quickly. The case is walnut, with a frame-and-panel lid; the music desk is built into the lid. There is a small storage compartment to the left of the keyboard, which is finished with ebony naturals and boxwood or walnut sharps. This clavichord is meant to sit on a table, so there is no stand included in the base price. A bargain at just $ 4,275.00 A stand similar to the stand for the large clavichord may be purchased for $630.00
